German Cockroach Habitat

German cockroaches are one of the most common household pests in Canada. They prefer warm, humid environments and are often found in kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere with access to food and water. Their small size allows them to hide in cracks, behind appliances, and inside cupboards, making infestations difficult to detect until they grow out of control.

German Cockroach Life Cycle

These cockroaches reproduce rapidly, making infestations hard to manage without professional help. A female can produce multiple egg cases (oothecae) in her lifetime, each containing up to 30–40 eggs. Once hatched, the young nymphs mature quickly and continue the cycle, allowing populations to explode in a matter of weeks.

German Cockroach Prevention

To reduce the risk of infestation:

  • Clean up food crumbs and spills immediately.

  • Store all food in tightly sealed containers.

  • Empty garbage regularly and keep bins sealed.

  • Keep kitchen appliances and sinks grease- and food-free.

  • Avoid leaving pet food or dirty dishes out overnight.

  • Seal cracks and gaps around baseboards, pipes, and cabinets.

Even with strict sanitation, German cockroaches are extremely persistent. Professional extermination services are often the only effective solution to eliminate them completely and prevent re-infestation.
