Wood Cockroach Control & Extermination

Wood cockroaches are outdoor insects that occasionally wander indoors, usually carried in with firewood or drawn to lights at night. They do not reproduce or infest homes but can still be a nuisance when they appear in large numbers. Because they prefer cool, damp outdoor environments, keeping entry points sealed and reducing exterior lighting are the most effective ways to prevent them from getting inside.

Wood Cockroach Habitat

Wood cockroaches are native outdoor insects commonly found in wooded areas, under bark, leaf litter, and decaying logs. Unlike other cockroach species, they do not thrive indoors and usually enter homes accidentally, often carried in on firewood or through open doors and windows. They prefer cool, moist environments and are most active during the warmer months. While they can survive briefly indoors, they typically cannot reproduce or establish infestations inside due to dry indoor conditions.

Wood Cockroach Life Cycle

Wood cockroaches reproduce outdoors, with females producing egg capsules (oothecae) that contain around 20–30 eggs. These capsules are deposited in soil, leaf litter, or under tree bark. Depending on temperature and humidity, eggs hatch in 1–2 months. Nymphs go through several molts over the course of 1–2 years before reaching adulthood. Because they breed outdoors, any wood cockroaches found indoors are usually temporary visitors rather than a sign of an infestation.

Wood Cockroach Prevention

To prevent wood cockroaches from entering your home:

  • Avoid bringing in firewood or debris that’s been stored outdoors without inspecting it.

  • Keep outdoor lights dim or switched off at night, as light attracts adult males.

  • Seal cracks, gaps, and entry points around doors, windows, and foundation vents.

  • Use screens and weather stripping to prevent entry through open windows or gaps.

  • Maintain a clean yard, removing leaf litter, wood piles, and excess moisture near the home.

Since wood cockroaches do not breed indoors, chemical treatments are rarely necessary. However, if they appear frequently or in large numbers, a pest control professional can help identify entry points and provide targeted prevention measures.
