Big Brown Bat

Colour: Brown
Size: 10-13mm
Wingspan: 30cm

Though beneficial to the environment by eating insects, the big brown bat can be an extremely messy pest, causing considerable damage to the structure of a building and potentially transmitting diseases such as rabies through their excrement which is called guano. Big Brown Bat Habitat

The big brown bat is encountered widely throughout North America. It has been called “the most widespread bat in North America. The big brown bat is nocturnal, roosting in sheltered places during the day. It will utilize a wide variety of structures for roosts, including mines, caves, tunnels, bat boxes, barns, buildings and homes.

Big Brown Bat Life Cycle

Big brown bats can live up to 20 or more years, but the average lifespan is thought to be considerably less. Mating occurs mainly in fall and winter, but females do not become pregnant until spring, just after hibernation ends. The young pups are born in May thru June. The young are fed milk for roughly 4 to 5 ½ weeks, learning to fly between 3 and 5 weeks, and staying and foraging with their mother for another 2 to 2 ½ weeks. Maternity colonies commonly contain 20 to 300 bats.

Big Brown Bat Prevention

Carefully examine your home for holes that might allow bats entry into your living quarters. Caulk any openings larger than a quarter-inch by a half-inch. Use window screens, chimney caps, and draft-guards beneath doors to attics, fill electrical and plumbing holes with stainless steel wool or caulking, and ensure that all doors to the outside close tightly.
