Squirrel Habitat

As indicated by their name, tree squirrels are arboreal, and they often make their homes either in leaf nests or inside tree cavities. All tree squirrels rely heavily on the availability of mast (the dry fruit from woody plants and trees) – especially acorns and other nuts – for their survival. So, a tree squirrel’s habitat must consist of these nut-bearing trees. Urban squirrels often choose homes and buildings to safely winter in that are near a food source. Sometimes relying on bird feeders.

At birth, squirrel babies are hairless and blind 28 to 35 days before they open their eyes. They begin to leave the nest at between 42 and 49 days, but the mother doesn’t wean them until they reach 56 to 70 days old, when they go out on their own. Squirrels born in the late summer may stay with the mother over the winter. Females and males’ mate in the spring or summer following their birth.
