Silverfish have metallic looking scales, antennae, and three bristles that protrude from their back. They are typically found under logs and rocks outdoors, but may search out food inside a building staining or causing damage to fabric, paper, and wallpaper. It is best to have a plan when dealing with a silverfish infestation.
The natural habitat of the Silverfish is decaying logs, below stones, in caves or in the midst of piles of foliage. Some silverfish even spend time in holes that were dug out previously by other animals. Drawn into the home they seek out spaces with moist and dim settings. Kitchens, bathrooms and basements are commonly wet locales, so they are typically good silverfish living environments. Silverfish also enjoy places in homes that are quiet and calm, such as cabinets, in the backs of sofas and closets.
Silverfish Life Cycle
Adults lay eggs in small groups containing a few to 50 eggs. The eggs are very small and deposited in cracks and crevices. The female normally lays less than 100 eggs during her life span. Under ideal conditions, the eggs hatch in two weeks, but may take up to two months to hatch. The young nymphs are very much like the adults except for size. Several years are required before they are sexually mature. Populations do not build up rapidly because of their slow development rate and the small number of eggs laid.
Don’t leave piles of newspaper, ephemera or mail lying around. Similarly, get rid of old cardboard boxes in the basement. Store off-season clothing in sealed bins and somewhere dry. Keep dry food in containers with tightly sealed lids.
Seal any cracks or crevices. Use a dehumidifier. Install a better bathroom fan for showers. Clear the perimeter around your home of leaves and other damp debris.
